As an Orange County newborn newborn photographer, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is capturing those early moments of a baby’s life. Those moments are fleeting and very precious! The first few weeks of your baby’s life are full of changes. An Orange County newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to preserve those delicate features, tiny hands, and sweet expressions. But I know that preparing for a photoshoot can feel overwhelming. To help you get ready, and ensure a smooth experience, I’ve compiled a few tips to prepare for your newborn photo session.
Newborn photo sessions are typically scheduled when your baby is between 5-14 days old. During this window, your baby is still very sleepy, flexible, and content to stay in peaceful poses. After this time, babies tend to be more alert and harder to soothe.
I suggest booking your session while you are still pregnant. This ensures availability and getting a spot reserved for when your baby arrives. Once you tor baby arrives, contact your photographer to schedule the session. After delivery, we can adjust the session date accordingly based on when you and your baby are ready.
Keep the baby awake an hour or so before the session. Try to gently keep baby awake for a short period of time before the newborn photo session. A little bit of play or tummy time can help them feel tired by the time we start the session, which will make them more likely to sleep through the photoshoot.
Feed baby right before the session so they are full and content. A well-fed baby is a usually a calm, sleepy baby. If you are breastfeeding, avoid foods that cause baby to be fussy such as gassy or caffeinated foods and drinks the day before the photoshoot.
Bring extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes. Accidents can happen, and you’ll be prepared.
If we are including family photos (and I hope you are!) , what you wear to your newborn photos session is important not only for your comfort but for how photos will look. Wear simple, neutral colors. Soft, neutral tones like whites, creams, beiges, light grays, and pastels work best for newborn photography. These colors keep the focus on your baby and create a timeless, serene look. Avoid bright colors, bold patterns, or logos as they can distract from the baby. You likely will be holding, cradling, or posing with your baby during the session, so make sure you wear something comfortable. Keep accessories to a minimum. While you may love jewelry or hats, I recommend keeping accessories minimal to ensure the attention stays on you and your baby.
Newborn sessions typically take 2 to 3 hours, depending on your baby’s needs and how many setups we are doing. Babies require lots of breaks, feeding, and soothing during the session, so it’s important to remain relaxed and patient. I will guide you and your baby through a variety of poses and setups. We’ll use soft props, blankets, and wraps. Some photos will be just your baby, while others can include you as a family.
Newborns need lots of breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing. Don’t worry if we need to pause frequently. The more comfortable your baby is, the better the photos will turn out. I am very experienced in calming newborns, but don’t be surprised if we need a little extra time for soothing. Newborn sessions are meant to be fun and relaxed. Just know that I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
Many parents love to use special items or personalized touches into their newborn Photography session. If you have a favorite blanket , a family heirloom, or an item with sentimental value that you would like to include, please feel free to bring it along. Before your session, we’ll discuss a particular theme, colors, or requests. Sharing your ideas will help ensure the session reflects , or any unique needs. your vision. Additionally, let me know if there are any concerns, such as your baby’s sleep patterns, feeding schedules, or unique needs.
During your newborn session, it’s perfectly fine to sit back and relax! The session is a time to watch your sweet baby – sleeping, stretching, and posing in adorable ways.
