What Should I Wear to My Bay Area Maternity Photo Session

Planning your maternity photo session is such an exciting part of pregnancy. One of the biggest questions expecting moms ask is,  “What Should I Wear to My Bay Area Maternity Photo Session”. The  right outfit can completely transform your photos and help you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable during your session.

As a Bay Area maternity photographer, I always recommend choosing clothing that highlights your baby bump while also reflecting your personal style. Your maternity photos are meant to celebrate this incredible season of life, and your wardrobe plays a huge role in creating timeless, elegant images you’ll love for years to come.

First, Choose the Style You Love Most

Before choosing colors or dresses, think about the overall look you want for your maternity session. Every mom has a different comfort level and style preference, and there is no right or wrong choice.

Here are some of the most popular maternity photography styles:

Simple and Classic

If you love timeless portraits, you may prefer a more modest and elegant look. Simple fitted dresses, long sleeves, soft fabrics, and minimal styling create beautiful classic maternity portraits that never go out of style.

Many expecting mothers prefer a fully covered look while still highlighting their baby bump. Long gowns, flowing sleeves, lace dresses, and layered fabrics can create a soft romantic style while remaining modest and sophisticated.  Many of the gowns in my client closet are classic gowns from Sew Trendy.

Showing Some Skin

Some moms love a slightly more modern and glamorous look. Off-the-shoulder gowns, fitted dresses with slits, open backs, or cropped fabrics can beautifully emphasize your silhouette while still feeling elegant and tasteful.

Draping With Fabric

One of the most dramatic fine art maternity styles involves draping flowing fabric around the body. Chiffon and silk fabrics photograph beautifully with movement and create an ethereal, goddess-inspired look that works especially well in studio or sunset sessions.

Long Tight Dresses

Fitted maternity gowns are extremely popular because they beautifully define the baby bump and create a sleek, elegant silhouette. Stretchy knit or jersey dresses photograph beautifully and flatter many body types.

Bodysuit Maternity Portraits

For a more editorial or fashion-inspired look, many moms choose bodysuits sometimes paired with flowing skirts, fabric draping, or sheer robes. Bodysuit portraits can feel modern, artistic, and incredibly empowering while still remaining tasteful and elegant.

The most important thing is choosing a style that feels authentic to you and makes you feel confident.

Choose Dresses That Highlight Your Baby Bump

Flowing gowns are one of the most popular choices for maternity photography, and for good reason. Long dresses photograph beautifully because they create movement and softness in your images. Dresses that are fitted around the bust and belly help beautifully showcase your growing bump while still feeling flattering and feminine.

Many moms love:

  • chiffon gowns,
  • fitted knit dresses,
  • lace maternity gowns,
  • off-the-shoulder styles,
  • or dresses with long trains for a more dramatic fine art look.

If you prefer a more casual style, a simple fitted maxi dress or even a cozy sweater with jeans can also photograph beautifully.

The most important thing is choosing something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.  My client closet has a collection of several maternity gowns to choose from.

Soft Neutral Colors Photograph Best

When choosing colors for your maternity session, soft neutral tones tend to photograph the most beautifully. Cream, ivory, beige, soft pink, dusty blue, sage green, and muted earth tones create a timeless and elegant look.

Neutral colors also keep the focus on you and your connection with your baby instead of distracting from the emotion of the images.

Bright neon colors and busy patterns can sometimes pull attention away from the subject, especially in outdoor settings. Simple, solid colors usually create the most classic and luxurious feel.

That said, don’t be afraid of a little drama. Deep jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, navy, or rust can look stunning during sunset sessions or studio portraits.

Consider Your Session Location

Your location can help guide your wardrobe choices. Think about how your dress will look against the environment.

For example:

  • Soft flowing gowns look beautiful in grassy fields or beaches. Soft neutrals or blues look grreat at beaches.
  • Earth tones work perfectly in redwood locations.
  • Elegant fitted dresses pair beautifully with studio sessions.
  • Light airy fabrics photograph wonderfully during golden hour outdoor sessions.

In the East Bay, many maternity sessions take place during sunset in open fields or hillsides, so dresses that move with the wind create especially beautiful images.

Coordinate With Your Family

If your partner or children will be joining the session, it’s important to coordinate outfits without matching exactly. Choose colors that complement each other rather than everyone wearing the same thing.

For example:

  • creams,
  • soft browns,
  • light blues,
  • and muted greens

all work beautifully together.

Avoid large logos, busy graphics, or athletic shoes whenever possible. Neutral and classic clothing helps create a more polished and timeless look.

For partners, simple button-down shirts, sweaters, henleys, or neutral t-shirts photograph very well. Barefoot family photos can also create a softer, more relaxed feeling in outdoor sessions.  If Mom chooses a formal look, her partner or kids should follow that lead.  If the look is more casual, a

Don’t Forget About Comfort

Pregnancy can already feel physically demanding, so comfort matters during your session. Make sure your outfit allows you to move, sit, and walk comfortably.

Avoid anything too tight that leaves marks on your skin or feels restrictive. If you’re wearing a new dress, try it on ahead of time and move around in it to make sure you feel comfortable.

It’s also a good idea to bring:

  • comfortable shoes for walking,
  • water,
  • touch-up makeup,
  • and a backup outfit if possible.

Many photographers also offer client closets with maternity gowns available to borrow, which can make styling much easier and less stressful.

Consider Professional Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup can make a huge difference in how confident you feel during your session. Camera-ready makeup photographs differently than everyday makeup, and professional styling can help create a polished final look.

Many expecting moms turn their maternity session into a relaxing self-care day, which can make the experience feel even more special.

Soft curls, natural glam makeup, and clean polished styling tend to photograph beautifully for maternity portraits.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos

Most maternity sessions are photographed between 28 and 34 weeks. During this time, your belly is beautifully round, but most moms are still comfortable enough to move around during the session.

Scheduling earlier is often best if you’re expecting multiples or if you’ve had a high-risk pregnancy.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

The most beautiful maternity photos happen when moms feel relaxed, confident, and genuinely themselves. Whether you choose an elegant flowing gown, a fitted dress, or a more casual outfit, your session should reflect your personality and style.

Your maternity session is about celebrating this incredible chapter of motherhood and preserving memories you’ll cherish forever. Choosing the right wardrobe simply helps tell that story in the most beautiful way possible.

As a Bay Area maternity photographer,  I’d be honored to document your birth journey or your newborn’s early days. Let’s preserve the strength, tenderness, and realness of your family story together.
