If your newborn won’t sleep during their newborn photo session, it’s completely okay. As an Orange County newborn photographer, I want you to know that I’ve seen it all! Wide-eyed babies, cat-nappers, power-nappers, little yawners who fall asleep right at the end….and I promise you, every session still turns out beautifully.
Let’s talk through exactly what happens if your little one isn’t in the mood for a nap, and why it might not be the problem you think it is.

Many newborn photos feature those sweet, curly, sleepy poses – but you might be surprised at how gorgeous awake photos can be. Eye contact, curious gazes. Stretches, yawns, and little expressive faces. I love capturing those moments.
In fact, some of the most treasured images in a gallery come from alert babies who are just soaking it all in. It’s pure personality, and that’s what makes your gallery uniquely yours.
Newborn photo sessions are intentionally slow and relaxed, allowing plenty of time for feeding, burping, soothing, and changing. If your baby is having a fussy or wakeful moment, we pause. If they need to feed, we break.
Most newborn sessions are scheduled within the first 7-14 days after birth because that’s when babies are sleepiest, but every baby is different. Some sleep the whole session; others drift in and out. I always schedule enough time so we can gently follow your baby’s lead.
I come equipped with a calming toolkit: white noise, gentle swaying, swaddling, and room warmth. I’ve developed these methods over years of photographing Orange County newborns, and I tailor them to each baby.
Sometimes a simple re-wrap or a gentle sway is all it takes. And even if your baby doesn’t fully doze off, we can still get peaceful, wrapped portraits that you’ll love.
Not all newborn poses require that your baby be in a deep sleep. If your little one is awake, but calm, we can use soft swaddles to keep them cozy and secure. The wrap helps soothe their startle reflex, and creates a beautiful, clean look for your photos.
Wrapped poses also allow us to get a variety of angles quickly – perfect if your baby is giving us a short window of calm!
Sometimes, when a baby is just not settling, it helps to switch things up. Holding your baby close – either in your arms or against your chest – often comforts them enough to rest or reset. It’s also a great chance to create meaningful parent and family portraits that highlight your bond.
If your baby is alert or unsettled, snuggling with mom, dad, or a sibling often soothes them and gets them back into a peaceful state.

Please don’t worry if your baby is wakeful, cluster feeding, or just needing extra comfort. This is all totally normal.
Part of the magic of newborn photography is working with what your baby gives us, rather than forcing a rigid plan. And often, those unplanned moments – wide eyes, little stretches, sweet feedings – are the ones you’ll cherish most.
I’ve worked with many babies, and one thing I know for sure: no two are alike. That’s why I’ll guide you through the entire session – whether that means adjusting the timeline, switching up the pose, or simply pausing for a cuddle break.
My goal is to create a calm, experience where you feel confident and your baby feels safe. Even if your baby doesn’t sleep a wink, we will still get beautiful, timeless images.
Newborn photography isn’t just about perfect poses. It’s about capturing the fleeting moment in your baby’s life – their soft skin, tiny fingers, curious eyes, and everything that makes them them.
